The Rise of the Rest?
Opportunities and Implications

Grad Symposium 2012
The Symposium is brought to you by the Dalhousie Graduate Society of Political Science.

Details:

March 8-9, 2012
Dalhousie University, Halifax Nova Scotia

Information will be posted here as it becomes available.

There is a growing 'conventional wisdom' that the United States is in decline and that we are entering a 'post-American' world, characterized by a 'rise of the rest'. The BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) are said to be the emerging centers of power in the 21st century. Is power really moving from West to East? Is the United States in decline? Will the rapid rise of the rest continue? Most importantly, what are the security and defence implications of this possible change in the global balance of power, particularly for Canada?

With this theme in mind, the Symposium Committee welcomes submissions from a variety of disciplines on the following themes:

  • American power in the 21st Century
  • Technology of Security and Defence (Drones, Cyber Warfare, Social Media)
  • WMD Proliferation and Strategic Stability
  • Environmental Security and Resource Scarcity (Arctic, Water, Oil, etc.)
  • Canada in the 21st Century
  • 'BRIC' Nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China)
  • Institutional Roles of IGOs, NGOs, and Regional Organizations (UN, NATO, ASEAN, NORAD, EU, etc.)

Other topics with a focus on defence and security will be considered. Please send a 250-300 word abstract and a short bio to: gradsym@dal.ca

SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS EXTENDED TO: FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2012.

Successful applicants will be notified by February 3rd, 2012. Selected papers will be published in an edited volume by the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies in August 2012.

The Symposium emphasizes the debate and question elements of the panel presentations and so presentations are limited to 10 minutes. Limited travel subsidies may be available for presenters. For more information, please send an email to: gradsym@dal.ca
